Mauritius Island The idyllic Mauritius island is located in the Indian Ocean, east of Madagascar and south west of India. Mauritius Island forms part of the Mascarene Islands and was formed from volcanic eruptions. Travelling around Mauritius Island The following guide can be used to travel around the island: Mauritian buses are a popular means of transport, but quite slow. Unfortunately, some of the buses are old and does not service the entire island. The main cities and towns are mostly covered but the coastal areas have limited services. Bus tickets are cheap compared to travelling by taxi. Other driving options include renting a car, given that tourists have an international drivers' licence. However, tourists have to be careful when driving on the left and be precautionary of other cars that do not respect speed limits, as this is often ignored. Road directions and road signs are also not very reliable around the coastal towns. The city and inner towns have better road infrastructure and facilities compared to rural areas on the coast. It is recommended to join a tour guide or a tour group. Motorbikes, bicycles or boats can be rented in the vicinity of hotels or bungalows. Taxis are widely available but prices can be quite high particularly for long distance travel. In order to avoid any delays or transport havoc, it is better to book for a means of transport from the airport to your hotel, with your travel agent before going to Mauritius.
