Overview of Mauritius
Mauritius island is located in the Indian Ocean with a population of about 1.5 million with a rainbow of culture and religions. The capital is Port-Louis. The majority of people residing on the island are Hindu, followed by Roman Catholic, Christian, Muslims and a minority of Sino-Mauritian and Caucasian .
The most popular language spoken is Creole and French but the official language is English. The climate is tropical, with two seasons. Summer (November to May) is very hot, wet and humid and cyclone formations are most likely to occur in summer. On the other hand, winter (May to November) is cool with an average temperature of 20 degrees.
Mauritius was discovered in 1505 by a Portuguese sailor but was then conquered by the Dutch, French and British. The country gained independence in 1968, has grown into a developing country and has one of Africa's highest per capita incomes.
